[This layout is created by AKD, you can find it here ... ]
Wednesday Art 01 ... once upon a time, I used to do a little 'gallery standout' feature on my blog. I was wandering through galleries today, when I was reminded of this, and I thought it would be nice to start it up again. So every Wednesday morning, I'd like to share with you a layout that 'stands out' in the galleries to me.
I guess I don't need to remind my blog readers that I am a simple scrapper, a VERY simple scrapper, lol. So layouts that are minimalist, they feature photos rather than elements, that use the basic principles of design, that have an eye to working with colour effectively, these are the pages that are going to 'speak' to me.
I'm starting off with a layout that I found in the My Scrapbook Art galleries, by a scrapper called AKD. A gorgeous piece of kraft paper, just two elements (if you don't count the circles), three gorgeous photos, and an elegant design. She has used the
I did a tutorial for Hummie's website in August 2007, and here is a little bit of the tutorial ...
My scrapping style is predominantly simple, incorporating lots of white space. I almost always use two ‘visual aids’ when creating a page … a grid that I use to help position my photos, and the ‘visual triangle’ principle.
Grid: I imagine a three by three grid is on top of my page, and place the eyes of my subject in my photo, or point of interest in my photo, over one of the intersections.
You can see that Natasha’s eyes are close to the intersection of the top right corner part of the grid.
Visual triangle: my visual triangle ties my page together. You can see that there are three flowers on my page that make up an imaginary triangle. This creates a virtual boundary for the viewer’s eye, linking all the layout elements together, and creating a feeling of ‘organized space’ on the page.
You can see that AKD has applied this principle in her layout, with the three photos, and the three circles. Oooops! Time for work ... more next time! :)

Beautifully explained, Sharon. Wouldn't a 3x3 grid overlay be a handy tool to use to check the design!

Thank you so much for this - I actually have a grid on a transparency for when I sketch my paper layouts, but it hadn't occurred to me to do the same for digital.

Thanks for the information and the grids. I can't wait to use them to help me with organizing my layouts.
